I was not expecting too much more than a quick in and out. Boy was I presently surprised. What a gorgeous little hidden gem this is. It was Sunday and overcast with some light drizzle. This type of weather and lighting makes for great photos and I had seen on the advertisements there were zebras, so I was here to see my one of my favorite animals. I came back and visited again during the week with a mate from England who is also a paramedic and you guessed it, it was raining again. I just had to get him to taste the carrot cake!!

I did a little research and found out that this used be a dairy farm back in the early 1800's. The Rademeyer family owned much of the original farm which was named Garsfontein. Jacobus Cornelis Rademeyer married Cornelia Johanna Erasmus and they ran a dairy farm on the portion where the Moreleta Kloof nature reserve is today.

Then in 1877 Carel Erasmus bought the farm and went on to build a three-roomed house, which is currently being used as the chapel, where many weddings are held. In 1903 Carel Erasmu's son-in-law Johan Marneweck built his own house on the land which is now the Rademeyers Restaurant.

The nature reserve is tucked away within the the foothills of the lush and green Moreleta Kloof. The place has a long history and I found out from the staff that that they believe the place is haunted. Lights get turn on an off at night in the restaurant and a huge gum tree caught alight and kept on reigniting at the same time very day for 3 days. Now if you did not already know, but Pretoria is well known for it's ghost stories and they even have ghost tours, if you into that check them out, I know a few of my mates who have had a blast on them.

The old farm house is really lovely inside with its wooden floors and rustic decor giving it a wonderful warm feeling. I wondered about the people that lived here back in the 1800's when this was a diary farm. We visited on a Sunday and a scrumptious Sunday Buffet on the go. It had started to drizzle a bit so we arranged for a pot of Earl Grey tea and carrot cake, as one normally would do!

This is a great urban adventure that the whole family can enjoy for free. Yes admission to the reserve is free of charge, great when you are on a tight budget or have large numbers in your family. There is a security guard hut at the gate and the a signage board reminding you that the gates are open from 06h00 to 18h00 all year around. The reserve is now managed by the Tshwane Metro Council’s Department of Nature Conservation and lets hope this will ensure that this jewel will remain a protected area for further generations to come.

While walking around and sipping our Earl Grey tea, we noticed that many trails runners pop in here to train. The paths are perfect for trail running and most of the areas will be able to accommodate a stroller. The pathways are also great for both children and the elderly to take a Sunday stroll after tea and cake, or to work off that scrumptious Sunday lunch Buffet.

Not only does the reserve boast a network of approximately 7.5km of hiking and walking tails, it also serves as a stunning conference venue and the stunning Rademeyer restaurant, pictured in the above photo, as well as the old buildings and chapel makes for a really gorgeous wedding venue.

The area is a protected greenbelt and as such, you will find a surprisingly large amount of game and bird life here, all the while being in the middle of suburbia. We found 2 herds of zebra with two foals, an abundance of springbok with their babies, impala, blesbok, the biggest group of ostrich I have ever encountered in one spot, plenty of ostrich and many other indigenous birds.

As you move along the trails you will notice the two different vegetation regions: in the north-western parts is the noticeable Gold Reef Mountain Bushveld with its rocky quartize ridges then on the south-eastern region you find Marikana Thornveld and open Sweet Acacia Karoo Woodland. With these two areas you are sure to find many birds, insects and stunning flowers.

There are several easy walking trails through the nature reserve each with different lengths and intensities to suit most walkers. For me this is more of a walk than a hike to be honest, but if you are unfit, just starting out as a trail runner or hiker, or wanting to settle into your new walking or hiking boots, then this is the place to do that. The trails all start within 1 km from the gate entrance and are clearly marked. You will take about 1 hr 30 mins to 2 hrs on average to complete the trails, depending on which one you choose to walk. However taking your camera, binoculars and a flask of tea along will ensure that you will very quickly swallow up 3 to 4 hours, taking the time to take in your surroundings and forget your troubles for a while.

You will find the wetland area at the bottom of the reserve and the Moreleta Spruit's tributary winds its way through the reserve. Along here walk quietly as you will come across many birds, smaller animals as well as buck moving from their natural watering holes and crossing the trails in front of you.

The whole reserve makes up a total area of 100 hectares and brilliant bird watching opportunities. We came across a large water monitor - I nearly pooped my brooks!. We spotted several mongoose and a tortoise, who came rocketing down the pathway and shot past us. I did not know it could go that fast, clearly it was on a mission and it was stopping for nothing. We saw what looked like a bat eared fox jet across the little plain into the woodland.

We spotted many birds from horn-bills, woodpeckers, blue crane, egrets, ibis, ducks, flycatchers, darters, African jacana, flycatchers, wagtails, swallows, mannikin, heron, sparrows, kingfishers, robins, lorries, shrikes, barbets, mouse-birds, moorhens, Egyptian geese, crows, finches, birds of prey, African hopoes, Red Billed Wood Hopoes, various bishops and weavers as well as many others like the "piet my vrou" cuckoo, lots of guinea fowl and hadedas. We could hear the calls in the trees but not always spot the birds!

Rademeyer Trail is 1.6 kilometres long

Duiker Trail is 2.9 kilometres long

Suikerbos Trail is 3.3 kilometres long.

As mentioned these are easy and relaxing walks. If you would like to walk longer then you could walk all 3 trails. What we did was to walk in a figure of 8 then we walked the Duiker trail in reverse to get close to 9 km of easy walking. Not too shabby!! I did find out that there are guided walks at the cost of R125.00,for those who would like the benefit of a guide with knowledge and experience of the reserve. We found the zebras and springbok out grazing on the open grasslands and woodland clearings. The bigger buck seem to like staying closer to the trails and duck into the shrubs and wooded areas when we came across them. We spotted several baby zebra with their moms. The smallest was still nursing and had a fluffy long coat.

Please remember to keep to the paths and trails as when you walk off path, you run the risk of standing on birds eggs or crushing micro ecosystem which are vital to the survival of the bigger animals. We did find a few insects bothering us, so wearing insect repellent is a good thing as well as sunscreen, a hat, walking stick and a bottle of water, as it can get hot and humid.

I found out that even those folk who are wheelchair bound or have poor eyesight, or are blind can enjoy the reserve. A stunning 2.2km trail called the Discovery and Sensory Trail, was designed with wheelchair access. It has concrete surfaces, clear signs and the natural environment has been utilized to tap into our different senses. This is really a great idea. Well done guys.

We were walking along when suddenly a bunch of ostriches came hurtling around the corner. They saw us and suddenly stopped. One was very interested in my bright pink rain jacket. I decided to remove it to avoid a possible confrontation. It eventually lost interest in me and went on to join the others feeding off the shrubs and grasses. I was very interested to see so many at one time. When I had hiked and walked elsewhere you usually find one lone ostrich or find them in pairs. This was a real treat!

The riverside forest is stunning and again you will find all sorts hiding in there if you are quiet. We have found mongoose running into the forests and there are plenty of birds who enjoy the wooded areas, like the cuckoos and this red billed wood hopoe.

There are several stunning ponds and water bodies in and around the main buildings and along the walks. A beautiful vlei with a large pond and wetland with a very well maintained bird-hide. Please be vigilant when bringing your kids and supervise them at all times, drownings happening in seconds and very often right under parents noses. Also please remember the animals are not pets or domesticated, yes you can get up close to them for those epic selfies, but do not try and engage with them or get too close. Watch your little ones that they don't wonder off and get kicked or bitten by any of the wild life.

It had started to pour down with rain, so we had to sit in the bird hide for a while, we then made a dash for the Rademeyer restaurant. They were having function and closed to the public, it was a week day, but I explained about my UK guest who was flying back tonight and had promised him the best carrot cake and Earl Grey tea. They made a plan and as we sat in the gazebo, so the duck and her ducklings and a lone rooster joined us for tea!!

I had a lot of fun with the lighting on the walls of the various buildings on the reserve. These are used for weddings and other functions and as mentioned are the remnants of some of the original barns, storage silos and homes.

How to get there: From the N1, take the Rigel Avenue turn-off and travel east. Turn left into Solomon Mahlangu (Hans Strijdom) Avenue; right into Rubenstein Street; and left into Helios Street. Parking is available in Helios Street. Moreletakloof Nature Reserve Coordinates 'S25 49 027 E028 17 465

I really recommend this place, take a lazy Sunday walk, enjoy Sunday buffets, Earl Grey tea and carrot cake in between crisscrossing the pathways, while taking selfies with the "horses in pajamas" in the background. It is really a lovely place to chill so close to home. Enjoy!
