Media: Adventure with a Purpose: Tankwa Camino Trek 5 weeks to go; the Cause Children's Hospital Trust
My interview in the Cape Argus Newspaper 31 March 2016
From their website:
Tankwa Camino
"The Tankwa Camino is a modern-day "Great Trek" which will take participants through one of the most starkly beautiful areas of our country, the Tankwa Karoo.

Inner strength and strong minds will keep you on track, but "your emotions need to be as educated as your intellect, it is important to know how to feel, how to respond, and how to let life in,... so that it can touch you" (Jim Robin) - and what better place to allow life in?
The first 20 km will bring you to the edge of The Great Escarpment...
Hunter S. Thompson's 1971 odyssey Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas opens with the words; "we were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take effect"
The Tankwa valley/desert will now become your drug for ten days, as you will walk through one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Africa, a landscape that beggars belief, that makes you realize God is indeed in all the details.
This is a place where time and distance is stretched, where horizons dance and disappear, where every corner brings a new startling vista, a vista from heaven or hell, depending on the time of day; but
In that magical hour before dark when the flat, harsh, grey, and brown tones start turning to reds, purples, and chocolate brown, you will vow to return.
Ending in the picturesque town of Ceres, your journey will have taken you through vastly different landscapes, a journey only imagined by so many."5 WEEKS TO GO....time is going and soon I will be taking part in this rather epic adventure. I must admit though I am a little excited regarding the icy cold that we will be encountering. Why? well, I am a 50-year-old woman in the throws of Menopause and experiencing hot-flushes the thought of walking through desert terrain does not exactly excite my unstable hormones so the colder the better, which is exactly why I have chosen this time of the year to tackle this monster walk. The Karoo is known for its desert terrain and scorching hot dry summers, in spring the sand comes alive bursting with exotic colours of the Namaqualand daisies, a real miracle and a wonder of the world where people from all over the world come to witness its magnificent landscape and an ecosystem alive with vibrancy. I am really looking forward to taking tons of photographs of the spectacular sunsets that the Karoo is famous for and of course all the iconic windmills!. The Karoo is also one of the best places in the world to view beautiful clear night skies to stargaze. So I really hope nighttime will not be completely freezing so I can perfect my stargazing and night landscape photography. My next blog will cover all the equipment and food that I will need to take along for my 10 days in the Karoo Desert. I will be staying overnight to break the 11-hour trip and will blog about my trip down. I have purposely chosen to stay in a small town with some rather interesting history and have asked my Historian daughter for some information on the little South African "Drop" (town) which I will share with you all.
