Luvuno Project, situated in Senoane, close to old Potch Road in Soweto, are the grannies who care for orphaned grandchildren.
MOWCS Luvuno cooks meals for elderly, especially grannies looking after children after parents have died due to HIV. They cook meals for 110 people on Tuesdays and Thursdays when the children come out of school. Meals are served at the mission house of the church. The MOWCS has a small room and adjoining garage. The small room serves as the kitchen.
The project would value space for exercise classes and handwork sessions for the grannies. The place is small, says branch manager, Ms Winnie Babetwa.
Of the 110 recipients, 30 are grannies and many more are children. The project has plates for serving lunch and some people bring lunchboxes so they can carry food home to the sick and frail. Winnie oversees a staff of seven.
The project staff would really appreciate a container in which they could create a kitchen space. This frees the other rooms for activities. The project would also like pots. Currently staff are bringing their own pots from home. There is also a small vegetable garden.
