9 Peaks Challenge: De Berg 2331m. The highest peak in Mpumalanga province.

De Berg:
De Berg pass is found in Mpumalanga province along the R577 road between Lydenburg and Stoffberg, South Africa. The peak stands at 2331 m and is the highest point on the Steenkampsberg range and nearby is the highest tar road in South Africa at 2256m.

During the winter months there is an extremely good chance of snow after the cold fronts have hit.

There is a beautiful ridge at 2200m with breathtaking views on both your left and right sides. There is a great bike ride along here called the T6 Tongeldoos – De Berg Route, which is tough but a popular biking trail with many accents and descents of 75 km along predominantly dirt roads and a portion of tarred road closer to De Berg. In the area are waterfalls, a river system, a sanctuary for the Wattled Crane, lots of flora and of cause hundreds of proteas our national plant and our national bird the Blue Crane is also found in the reserve.

We passed many farms and gorgeous guest houses along the way and slept the night in Dullstroom. The little town is a bustle of visitors, mostly from Gauteng, who come to taste the amazing food, dine at the quaint restaurants, and stay a weekend to spend trout fishing, while the wives go out at shop at the many craft outlets.

The area is really beautiful and there is lots to do from mountain biking, trail running, hiking, horse trails, fly fishing just to name a few. So whether you want adventure, a weekend escape or good food this is the place to be.
