Reflections of my 30 Day Hunger Challenge in support of Meals on Wheels SA
30 Day Hunger Challenge 2014
Several people from Meals on Wheels took part in a 30 day hunger challenge whereby we missed one meal. Family and friends where invited to donated R10 for every meal missed. I chose to sacrifice my main mail which is dinner/supper and go to bed hungry as do 12.5 million South Africans each and every night - over 2,5 million of them are children! This is my thoughts over the 30 day challenge posted on Face Book.
Post 1st November 2014 Will miss out on dinner. Want to experience going to bed on an empty stomach as do about 12.5 million people every night. I serve 4 million people in the inner city of Johannesburg as a paramedic, most go to bed hungry. This is for them especially the little one I have put into body bags who died of starvation. Good luck to the team.

DAY 2 OF MOWS 30 day Hunger challenge. Had a shake in morning. Did a quick 2 hr hike. Late lunch at 3 pm. Family ate chicken curry . I missed dinner. Going to bed hungry as per my challenge. Please see post below for meals on wheels banking details. Use reference hungerkim to donate R10 for every meal given up. That would total R300 over 30 days.

DAY 3 OF 30 MEALS ON WHEELS 30 DAY HUNGER CHALLENGE. Today had protein shake and 1 small plate of food and 40 mins on the treadmill . TJOE Tummy grumbling big time. Praying for all those 12.5 million going hungry in South Africa tonight. Help me make a difference and donate R10 for every meal I miss this equates to R300 donation for the month. Remember to use reference hungerkim I have received R2100. 00 in pledges thus far. Thank you to all that have pledged.

DAY 4 OF 30 day hunger challenge. 1 shake and a meal at 12h00. Just come back from shift and going to bed with a grumbling tummy. Thank you for all the support during this challenge. Putting a child in a body bag due to starvation reminds me why I am doing this. Awareness of the unnecessary deaths of starving children in our country that the powers that be just don't seem to care about and to raise money for meals on wheels to help me put one less kiddie in a body bag.
Post 5th November
DAY 5 of 30 day hunger challenge. 1 protein shake and small plate of food. 20 min treadmill. Really battled with fatigue today. Tummy actually tender and it made me wonder if the 12.5 million South Africans experienced this on a daily basis on top of hunger pains. Day 5 of going to bed hungry. Please don't forget to donate R10 for every meal I sacrifice to Meals on Wheels total over 30 days R300. Thank you to those who have donated. Ref: hungerkim

DAY 7 of 30 day hunger challenge. 1 shake and small plate food. Tonight while on duty thinking of those homeless due loosing everything and not knowing how or when their next meal is coming.
DAY 08 of 30 day hunger challenge. Thinking of the homeless tonight in the pouring rain. Cold. Wet and hungry as I curl up in my dry warm bed.
Post 9th November
DAY 9 of 30 day hunger challenge. Todays dinner sacrificed and dedicated to all the school kids going to school on an empty stomach to write their final year exams. I pray our leaders can sort out the school feeding programmes so many of them are mismanaged leaving children hungry! !!
Post 10th November
DAY 10 OF 30 DAY hunger challenge. Today I was again reminded that hunger has no colour. Everyday in both my job as a paramedic in the inner city of Johannesburg and as Ambassador for Meals on Wheels SA I see children of all cultures; hungry and begging for food or eating out of dustbins. Mother Theresa said "if you can't feed 100 then just feed one" tonight as I choose to sacrifice my dinner the hunger in my stomach is for each and every one of these little ones we pass by everyday. Make a difference and donate R10 to Meals on Wheels for every dinner I miss over the next 30 days. Please use hungerkim as you reference. You can make a difference!!
Post 11th November
DAY 11 OF 30 DAY HUNGER CHALLENGE. tomorrow I am back on the beat on the streets of Jozi and this picture is a stark reminder of the little ones whose lives I may or may not save. Tonight as I go to bed on an empty stomach my sacrificed meal is dedicated to the hope that in the next 4 days I do not put a child in a body bag especially due to malnutrition or starvation. Please don't forget to donate R10 for every meal I sacrifice to Meals on wheels. Ref hungerKim. Thank you.
Post 12th November
DAY 12 OF 30 DAY HUNGER CHALLENGE. crappie day at work today so just got home and had a hot bubble bath and 1/2 glass of red wine (can't drink so that's heaps for me felling most happy) maybe the alcohol will numb the hunger pains which is why so many homeless drink and it makes them feel warmer. So easy for us to judge. How privileged I am that I choose to go to bed hungry and will sleep in a cozy warm and dry bed tonight, loved and safe. Tonight's meal is dedicated to all those hungry and starving street children, the forgotten souls destined for my body bag one way or another. When will Corprution, greed and wasteful expenditure end so this money can go to the upliftment of these street kids. Today my head is not in a good space too many faces too many places and no hope and nothing changes for these kids. Don't forget to donate R10 for every meal on miss to Meals on Wheels ref hungerKim

DAY 13 OF 30 day Hunger Challenge. Today I was in a happy place. 700 children were fed thank you to DISCOVERY AND EATFRESH. The awesome Discovery volunteers and the Meals on Wheels team made a difference and tonight 700 little tummies will be full when they lay their little heads down. Today little people could shine in the love and kindness of stranger. You don't need to wear a cape to be a hero in the eyes of a child.

DAY 14 OF 30 DAY HUNGER Challenge. Today I missed breakfast and lunch and then feasted on a fantastic meal, wedding cake celebrating a special young couples future life and dreams. Then it struck me this is how Meals on Wheels must appear to the hungry. Meals and Wheels arrive to serve a meal we take for granted everyday . To the hungry a banquet of delicious life saving food. How blessed I am tonight I go to bed on a full tummy. Thank you Meals on Wheels for all that you do. For making a difference.
Post 15th November
DAY 15 OF 30 DAY HUNGER CHALLENGE. MISSED OUT ON LUNCH today and had amazing wedding dinner on the lake with beautiful sunsets. Again I was reminded what a privilege it is going to bed on a full tummy unlike the 12.5 million South Africans who will go to bed hungry tonight. Tonight again the Meals on wheels banquet reminded me to eat as much as I can for tomorrow I will go to bed hungry again, for me a choice, for millions a way of life.

DAY 17 OF 30 DAY HUNGER CHALLENGE. no dinner tonight. My dinner sacraficed for the 12 5 million South Africans going to bed hungry tonight while our corrupt politicians go to bed with overfull stomachs. It's time government started to save its own people before going across borders to feed others while our people die. Charity starts at home!!!
Post 18th November
DAY 18 OF 30 DAY HUNGER CHALLENGE. Tonight my sacrificed dinner is for each of those nearly 3 million children in South Africa who will go to bed hungry tonight. Together we can end hunger you don't need to wear a red Cape or bunker gear to be a hero. Let's start a ripple effect. It starts with you....let's join hands and change the world.!!
Post 19th November
DAY 19 OF 30 DAY HUNGER CHALLENGE. SO often we judge a homeless person forgetting that not so long ago they too had big dreams family and perhaps even a job before it just went all horribly wrong! !. What if the roles were to be reversed. Everyday I get to speak to the homeless and guess what... they are human and need love warmth and kindness just like you and me. They too have bad days theirs just continue longer than ours and rarely has a happy ending. Survival is paramount. We can help by donating to Meals on Wheels who feed thousands of vulnerable people just like this man.
Post 20th November
DAY 20 OF 30 DAY HUNGER CHALLENGE. As I lay in bed feeling the hunger pains of my missed meal, I am reminded of the stark reality of food security. We need to change the way in which we help others. Does it really help to just hand out food indefinitely or should we be looking at the bigger picture. At Meals on Wheels we help with emergency food aid and at the same time we help the community to get back on their feet by helping to start or improve on a community vegetable garden. This is brand new territory that I am so excited to be part of. The Zodwa Pride endorsement. If you would like to make a difference you can help by donating to meals on wheels. You can also donate seedlings and bring your corporate volunteers along to take part in my Team Zodwa EatFresh corporate Caring and Sharing Day#makeeverydayamandeladay and #reachoutbeahero#teamzodwa #eatfresh #mows

DAY 21 OF 30 DAY HUNGER CHALLENGE: my Team Zodwa Foundation's motto is to "Reach out.....be a hero". Why this motto? Simple really you do not need to wear a fire fighter or paramedic uniform to be a hero all you need to do is reach out to someone in their darkest hour and you too will be their hero. It can be as simple as handing out a blanket to the homeless man you passby everyday or sharing your school lunch with that kid in your school you know goes hungry most days and is too embarrassed to ask for help or it could cost you nothing by simply smiling and greeting a stranger in a lift who may be having such a bad day that they were going all the way to the top floor to jump. Your kindness made them realise not all is lost. Today you saved a life. Now you too can reach out and be a hero in the life of a complete stranger. Please make a donation to Meals on Wheels SA and use the reference HungerKim to help them to put a smile on a hungry persons face. Banking details posted on comments. THANK YOU HEROES! !!

DAY 22 OF 30 DAY HUNGER CHALLENGE as I lay in bed with a hungry belly I find myself reflecting on some of the crazy adventures and extremes that I have put my body through in the past 9 years to raise funds and create awareness while I Adventure with a Purpose. My quest to climb a million metres to feed a million children has taken me to the top of the tallest free standing mountain in the world, Mt Kilimanjaro to Mt Ainos, a European Ultra Peak, to the SA 9 Peaks challenge racing in pink Land Rovers and pink Peugeots between our 9 provinces and climbing the highest peak in each, all in 7 days and I even painted 2 car tyres pink and dragged them behind me for the past 7 years in races each time dragging my important flags of hope and dreams with me and no matter how many times I would fall or how heavy the burden seemed I would find my mind wondering off to the moment our eyes locked, tears in your eyes as I handed you the food you so desperately needed so you could live another day and it's you who keeps me going forward, forward to the next adventure to carry your dreams and hopes in my heart. Many of you know I work as an ALS Paramedic in the inner city of Johannesburg for the fire department. The work is dangerous and we put our lives on the line daily to save a complete stranger. What extremes would you go to help a fellow human being. You could help me reach my goal by simply donating to Meals on Wheels so they can help me to reach my goal to feed a million children. to Donate Directly via EFT

DAY 23 OF 30 DAY HUNGER CHALLENGE: today I reflect on the thousands of children that I have helped to feed over the past 9 years. Hunger is a terrible thing. I have watched as it robs your future to flourish and to make a worthwhile contribution to the economy. It creates unemployment, creates crime and takes away your childhood. I helped to feed the little ones in this picture during a Mandela Day Event. Why is it that food we take for granted everyday becomes a treat to the hungry. A feast for kings. Why is it we must wait until a specially organised event to feed a child. Why can't we do it more often. In the children's rights charter it says that food, warmth and shelter, protection, love and healthcare is a child's right. Tjoe we as the big people in our beautiful Rainbow Nation are failing our children daily. We should honour our Tata's legacy by protecting the children of our land that he cherished so much. Let's make everyday a Mandela day certainly that's what Meals on Wheels does daily but they need your help to keep the wheels turning. You can help by donating to Meals on Wheels using hungerKim as your reference. Let's work together and if you or your company could like to get involved please inbox me. We have tons of projects on the go. to Donate Directly via EFT

DAY 25 OF 30 DAY HUNGER CHALLENGE today marks 16 days of activism against violence against women and children. Did you know according to the Children protection Act that failing to feed a child or not hugging a child is deemed child abuse . Very basic forms of abuse that no one takes seriously, why because like verbal abuse, no visible bruises or bones broken. But the end result years down the line is catastrophic. We are raising a nation of children deprived of basic human needs and that will never heal our land. A starving child is wrong and cruel. I deal with these kids everyday. I cannot save them all. Mother Teresa said: if you can't feed 100 then just feed one. I know that I can't save all the children of our rainbow country but together we can certainly make a difference. Please support Meals on Wheels who fed 11.5 million people last year to keep the wheels moving. Don't forget to use reference Hungerkim.

DAY 26 of 40 day hunger challenge. The countdown has begun 4 days left. We would like to fill this panel van this full of food. Jordan, Zee and myself helped to hand out 5 000 meals this day. We cannot explain the joy of giving - it needs to be felt for yourself! To the communities, this white van is a miracle on wheels carrying God's angels to help them through another day. Please help me to reach my goal to feed a million children and donate to meals on wheels using reference hungerkim. Thank you. to Donate Directly via EFT

DAY 27 OF 30 DAY HUNGER CHALLENGE TODAY WITH ALL the heavy rain flooding and tornados we have had this reminds me of the many homeless people sleeping under bridges and trees. Spare them a thought as we lie warm in bed on a full tummy. I have 3 days left so please join me on as my challenge comes to and end and donate to meals on wheels. Photo taken from our Team Zodwa Corner stone feeding programme. This was started by my hubby 20 years ago. We feed nearly 500 homeless guys in our area alone every Friday night. Robindale spar, Not Bread Alone and our Catholic victory park church ( the lemon squeeze as it's fondly known)with assistance from the men's groups and Vincent De Paul now also now help us. Imagine if each person did just one thing what we could achieve. Let's help to keep the wheels turning and support meals on wheels.

DAY 29 OF 30 DAY HUNGER CHALLENGE Today I was on duty and did several calls inside the squatter camps. It was a shooting and as I worked on the patient along side with my fire fighters and the police, with the ever growing angry crowd, I was acutely reminded how many of our people live far below the breadline. Children witness these violent events here and it's become a normal way of life. The daily struggles of keeping dry and warm in your shack. Of sourcing food. A simple bath is almost impossible. No running water or electricity. The children's playground littered with human waste, rats and rubbish. This is their daily reality. These are the people that Meals on wheels feed daily. They fed 11.5 million people last year and as you have already read 12.5 million people go to bed hungry every night. Please help by donating to meals on wheels to keep the wheels turning.
