Rating the Trails with my Jimny and my boys: Cosmos Wonderland!

Suikerbosrand Cosmos wonderland!!

Every March and November our countryside completely explodes with a kaleidoscope of colours of pink and white, when the very pretty pink and white cosmos flowers bloom in early autumn and again in late summer.

They grow easily in the soil on the side of the roads disturbed by the road scrapers and graders widening of the verges. Here in Jozi we have the cosmos blooming in April, in Gauteng we have a burst of light and dark pinks and white that continue for kilometers a time covering huge fields and open spaces
it is truly an amazing sight!!

We went for a hike at the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve and this was what we came across. Mother Nature at her best displaying her beauty!
 Alice in wonderland!!
Cosmos is native to the scrubs and meadowlands in Mexico where most of the species occurs, as well as in the southern parts of the United States, Arizona, Central America and to South America as far south as Paraguay. One species, C, bipinnatus, is naturalized across much of the eastern United States and eastern Canada.
 marshmallow flowers!!
Also widespread across the higher eastern plains of South Africa, where it was originally introduced through contaminated horse feed, which was imported during the Anglo-Boer War from Argentina.
 lost in pink!!
Cosmos are a herbaceous type of perennial plant growing up to 0.3m (1 ft 0 in - 6 ft 7in) tall. the leaves are rather simple and are pinnate or bipinnate by nature. They are arranged in opposite pairs. The flowers are produced in a capitulum with a ring of broad ray florets and a centre of disc florets, flower colours are variable between different species. The genus includes several ornamental plants popular in gardens. numerous hybrids and cultivars have been selected and named.
