Team Zodwa/Khulisa NYDA 2014 Programme: Moffat view Gardens and Rifle Range Meals on Wheels

Team Zodwa NYDA Moffat view at Rifle Range Meals on Wheels and Moffat view Gardens.

Today the excited youth went off to the Rifle Range Meals on Wheels warehouse and under the watchful eye of Allan,  helped to pack lots of pies and then loaded them into the Meals on Wheels Peugeot Panel vans. It was hard work and they youth said they felt as though they also got a gym workout while they were at it!

Once this was done they then went back to Moffat View were they continued with the huge clean up of the community garden area as well as the vlei which is very overgrown and a danger especially for the women of the community who have been attacked near the veli. Recently other unemployed youth from the area decided to join the Team Zodwa NYDA team after hearing all that they were achieving within the community of Moffat view. They also have asked to join the programme but sadly we cannot take on more youth on this particular NYDA programme as it was only going to run for 2 months and is a pilot programme that the government wanted implemented after a trial. The sad thing is once the two months are up these youth will be unemployed again, however what this programme has achieved is to upskill unemployed youth, training them in life skills, earn a small stitement and to better prepare them for more permanent employment, or to start their own enterprise, very much in line with the better known current learnership programmes. It has been an exciting and very busy two months and we hope that once all the data has been captured and analysing of this data is done the Government will fund programmes like this on a more permanent basis and in doing so lower the unemployment  and skills shortage in our country. It has been such a privilege to have been asked in as a partner to Khulisa Social solutions for this project.
