My article on FEAT 2014 - Adventurers night out - Enjoy

FEAT 2014 is upon us!!!

The founder:

Every year an opportunity for fellow adventurers to gather under one roof takes place. To have such a gathering in the first place is nothing short of a miracle as us adventure folk cannot sit still for long.

So what is this FEAT about:

"Short Description: it was founded in June 2010 by Lisa de Speville an adventurer herself. FEAT (Fascinating Expedition & Adventure Talks) is an evening of time-limited presentations. Each Presenter speaks for seven minutes, no more, no less. A bit like Banff meets TED talks.

Mission: there are so many amazing people around the World who accomplish incredible feats of adventure. We invites them to share the FEAT stage for one night only, to speak about their adventures. "

  • Lights action....Let the adventure begin.................
The night is jam packed with adventurers from both South Africa and abroad rocking the centre stage for 7 minutes (if there was not a set time limit is would be complete chaos and the event would go on for days!) with a captive audience on the edge of their seats - one moment your jaw drops in how ballzy some of the adventures are and in the next you are crying with laughter at some of the antics shared during the presentation. What you see is what you get no frills, pure honesty!

Our host and founder Lisa De Speville and the awesome  Simon Gear our MC get the event going - great chemistry between the two

Dramatic footage and tales of real courage will enthrall you the entire night. The vibe is infectious with the excited chatter of fellow adventurers sharing their own old and new adventures, sometime over a beer and that leads to new crazy ideas. You will be forgiven to think you have just landed in the middle of the nut house! Clearly most of us push out the parametres of  what's is deemed normal, Insane is what most of you call us. The thing is we think you are crazy too for not going out there to push your body to the limit, to rediscover your abilities and strengths, to dangle your body over a sheer cliff with your old friend adrenaline, or swim off a waterfall or be chased by wild dingos across the plains and most times the excitement of being a little lost, well most of the time lets be honest, we are the scholars of learning to perfect the art of "winging it". In the end to find your soul as you mark the deed done, that sense of inner peace and self worth and recognizing that super machine that you live in that God created is yours to use to discover the world and indeed to discover yourself.

Guy Jennings the awesome due on the Fat Bike adventure.

Crazy mates.......
Clyde Barendse and Steve Black who races each other One ran and one paddled.

As the speakers enter the stage one by one  and are introduced, you can feel the excitement and anticipation in the crowd. Many are mates and this adds to the atmosphere of the big Adventure Family. The adventures are a fantastic bunch,  humorous,  down to earth and humble and soon you realise you too could go on any adventure of your own choosing whether it is a small day adventure or a longer more serious undertaking. Adventure is for everyone and you can set your own limits. You will walk away inspired by the human machine and at how wonderful the human brain is at forgetting the bad stuff so we go out there and do it all over again. You cannot walk away from FEAT and not want to go out and conquer your world no matter how big or small it may be.

Well known adventurer  David Grier talking about life's lessons learned on all his many adventures.

and then on came the Wits Adventure Students Alistair Moodie and patty Czepi Chappel.

Then it all went South , much to the delight of all who were in fits of laughter at the two Wits University students who begged, borrowed and stole to sail across the ocean and as we know how most adventures ideas start off after some consumption of the good stuff  and theirs was no different!! So awesome to see the young SA lads taking on adventure.

Just the kind of blokes your mom warned you about!! Just when the audience thought that us adventure folk were a standup bunch the truth about us is revealed, yes we are nutters, but you've got to love us. Besides they were providing some great eye candy for us ladies especially as many of the adventurers are getting rather grey and have difficulty in reading their notes,  I noticed, and some new talent is rather welcome!!

and then..............pandemonium and the crowd erupts as Lisa and Simon run for their lives well Simon did but Lisa looked like she was having fun!

Sean Disney (Diz) and Vaughn de la Harpe had us in laughter as they chatted about the funny stories from their newly published book "Poles Apart with some pointy bit in between"  a must read!

Cobus van Zyl and Ryno Griesel the dudes that just recently smashed the Drakensberg Traverse Record in style keeping the Mountain Adventure world gasping. Salute boys!

Vasti Geldenhuys asked her adventure boyfriend to take her to New York. The only problem was her boyfriend is none other than Adventurer Riaan Manser. Big Mistake girlfriend!

Result:this tiny boat sailed from Africa to New York making her the first woman to do so!

Jacques Homan won the 2013 FEAT Award for his epic Lesotho hike-mtb-paddle adventure idea, which he undertook with his mate Eric Guidemond...and of course there was the trip to the highest pub in Africa to get them ready for their awesome adventure!.

Squash Falconer a UK Adventurer shared her latest adventure on this very weird bike shows the audience than event the adventure girls have a quirky side!.

Squash was on hand earlier this evening to show enthusiasts how its done!

Tracy Rankin  the Queen of Park Runs spoke about her passion and Park Runs across South Africa and abroad. One of my favorite lady runners inspiring us all to hit the trails running every Saturday morning!!

and so ends another fantastic FEAT
The one thing that stands out in this event for me is the laughter and sheer excitement in all the people you will meet, bobbing heads, feet shifting, shiny laughing eyes, broad smiles and real people, people of adventure, people born of the soil, mountains and extremes who actually were once normal even if it was for a short time. Now those minds are filled with heroic tales, humorous moments and sheer guts and determination to achieve what others may deem impossible until its done!

And now it was time to mingle with the jungle folk, have few beers, share anecdotes and pose for a few adventure photographs and spend some money on adventure stuff!!

Sean and Vaughn's awesome book a must read
found it for sale in Dubai airport on the rack
as top 10 best sellers!!

photo fun!!
