Greece Adventure 2014: Athens Piraeus Tour
The tour through Piraeus was quick it is a small area with a very pretty coastline and many yachts.

Today its the main port of Athens and in fact its the biggest port in Greece.
It is one of the leading ports in the Mediterranean, and an important centre for merchant marine, industry as well as transportation.
The Piraeus port is the chief exit point from the city by sea for destinations between the Aegean Islands and further along the eastern Mediterranean. Domestic destinations obviously are to the Aegean Islands.

The port is used by several of the big European Cruise liners. Above is the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus.

There are three "tree ports" the central port, the Zea Marina and Mikrolimano. Piraeus in antiquity was an island. Travellers were ferried across to the mainland.

The architect Ippodamos designed the urban planning back in the mid 5th century BC. Ippodamos plans were then used as the guidelines for the reconstruction of the city in 1834. The bay of Faliron was used by the Athenians before the 5th century BC.
We passed many interesting buildings and many churches.
This huge statue of a Lion seems to guard the port.
