Greece Adventure 2014: Ancient City of Agora

(A4)Ancient Agora:An interesting archaeological site to the north of the Acropolis. The political, financial and religious Centre of ancient Athens.
The  Ancient Agora of Classical Athens is the best known example of an ancient an ancient Greek Agora and is located to the northwest of the Acropolis. It sits on the west of a hill called Kolonus Agoraios (Market hill).

STOP A4: Ancient city of Agora:
While standing on  Arios Pagos and looking down the valley we could see the layout of Agora. Its size and proportions was breathtaking. The huge temple of epic proportions, Hephaistos, inviting you to come in and play with the ancients. I was completely blown away by this stunning ancient city its ruins speaking out of tales of ancient times, of opulence and discovery.

We were swept into an ancient world so majestic so surreal as you walk through the ruins, the ancient pathways, the huge trees and forests and you feel somewhat small and insignificant knowing the Ancients walked these very paths as they went about their important business of the day.

We had seen so many ruins today but this was the first city and it took hours walking through and even then we did not cover every inch.

The final site was located at the intersection of 3 existing roads connected to the Panathenaic way, the main road in Athens.

It was then organized by Peisistratus, who removed private houses from the agora, closed wells and making it the centre of the Athenian Government.

He also built the many amazing water drainage systems that we  found as well as fountains and a temple to the Olympian gods. then in the 5th and 4th century BC the temples constructed to the gods Hephaestus, Zeus and Apollo.

Starting in 480 BC,  the 2nd Persian invasion  of Greece
Starting in 480 BC, the Second Persian invasion of Greece caused many Athenians to flee the city, leaving it largely abandoned. The city was almost completely destroyed, but the Athenians returned following the defeat of the Persians in 478, and the Agora was rebuilt.[7] There were no more major changes until the 2nd century BC when the east and south sides of the square were remodeled by wealthy foreign rulers.[8]

The agora was probably laid out in the center of the city as a public space around the 6th century BC.

We discovered the Museum – it is amazing and so beautifully put together with many artifacts that leave you in awe.

              museum photos............................

We came across an ancient church and WOW what a find, we felt so humbled and its ancient beauty that had been painstakingly persevered and restored left you reeling in complete bewilderment that such a place could still exist almost unscathed.

As we walked along the many paths and roads we were swept away back in time where the ancients once roamed the very streets we were on. It was an entire city with businesses and places of law and learning. Places of worship and daily life. It leaves your breathless and in complete awe.

(A4/Thession) Temple of Hephaestus:The temple of Hephaestus, also known as Thesseion is one of the best preserved ancient temples. Two deities were jointly worshiped in the temple god Hephaestus, protector of all metallurgists and the goddess Athena Ergani, protecting all potters and the cottage industries.

After visiting the amazing temple we then made our way to the Algora Museum.

the Algora Museum: what a beautiful museum filled with so many treasures found here in the Ancient city of Algora.

Once we had walked the open corridors of history we made our way back up the ancient paths of Agora and back to our tour bus.

 and ends our Agora Adventure....
