Work: New years Hillbrow

Every year for the past 7 years I worked without missing a New years eve in Hillbrow.  In 1999 till about 2004 it was hectic. stoves, fridges and microwaves would be flung out of high rise buildings onto ambulances and fire engines because of this no "soft cars" are allowed in and we use armoured vehicles as ambulances.

bullet proof vests and helmets are required

when you drive through the streets they are littered with broken beds, mattress on fire, carpets, bedding and other household goods.

one year we had a rolled up carpet which was on fire land on the tiny windscreen of the armoured car and we could not see.  with lots of shrieks of nervous laughter and driving into poles and onto pavements we managed to get the burning carpet off. no one in their right mind was about to get out and run out into the open road and become a target.

many stories both true and most urban legend are told from that night!! LOL
