EMS women to attempt seven summits

Three women from the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) will begin climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in their quest to conquer the “seven summits”, the highest mountains on each of the continents.
The ladies belong to the EMS group called Team Zodwa, which was formed in 2005 but officially launched in 2006.
The team specializes in competitive extrication exercises.
Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesman Percy Morokane said the team has already taken part in the 2006 World Extrication Championships in Cape Town and in 2007 they traveled to Barcelona, Spain, where they came 18th out of 36 teams.
“Since we started competing way back in 2006 we were and are still the only woman-only team in South Africa and the whole world taking part in these championships”, said founder and team leader Kim Williams.
She said the team wanted to demystify the perception and the notion that fire-fighting and especially extrication (the technical form of freeing a trapped motor-vehicle accident victim) as a “man thing”.
Not only is the team giving motivational talks and educating woman and children about safety when they are not competing, the team is also involved in charity fundraising.
In 2007, together with the legendary boxing champion Baby Jake Matlala, they managed to raise R100 000 during the charity mile horse race. The team also has strong links with Nkosi’s Haven.
