Two Johannesburg firefighters are planning to climb Mount Elbrus in Russia this September, in honour of a colleague who was killed by her husband last year. They also want to raise funds for underprivileged children.
Kim Williams, 46, and Rachel Meth, 33, are adventure junkies whose long-term aim is to climb the seven highest mountains and seven highest volcanoes in the world.
Williams said her team was dubbed Team Zodwa’s. Its first competition was the World Extrication and Rescue Championship in Spain.
Out of the 32 participating teams they were placed at number 18, four positions higher than the South African male team.
“Our great thrill was climbing Mount Kilimajaro in October 2009,” said Williams.
The team suffered a loss early last year when fellow member and firefighter Khabo Legote, 32, was shot dead by her husband.
“Her death was a great loss to us and we want to summit the mountain in her honour as that was also her dream,” said Willams, a mother of three.
Williams said they were also inspired to raise funds for underprivileged children, by the plight of the many kids they encountered in the course of their work as firefighters.
“We work a lot in the slums and informal settlements around Johannesburg. It has made me determined to help those that I can,” said Williams.
“We are asking companies and individuals to donate a bag of Vitameal to a needy child for every metre we climb.”
The team also hopes that sponsors will help them with their trip to Russia. “If we can get someone to pay for our flight, clothes and supplies we would really appreciate that,” said Williams.
She said for their Kilimanjaro climb they had to beg and borrow.
“We did not even have proper boots so had to use our fire-fighter boots and we ended up with frostbite,” laughs Williams.
This weekend the two will be taking part in the 30km 702 Walk the Talk while dragging tyres behind them to raise funds for the needy.
The funds raised will go towards Nkosi’s Haven and affiliated projects, as well as Nourish the Children.
