MANDELA DAY 2014: TEAM ZODWA BLANK DRIVE-INNER CITY

all in all it was a really special night shift helping some of our homeless keep warm and preventing us from putting less homeless people in body bags the following morning due to the cold.
As Firefighters and Paramedics we help you in your most darkest and worst moments, it is not oftent that we get to experience that warm and fuzzy felling, but that changed one freezing night this winter with temperatures plummeting, ice forming on the inner city roads.

I put a request on my face book page "today buy 1 blanket and hand it out to that homeless person you drive past everyday" - well messages came flooding in and before I knew it I had received over 100 blankets all stuffed into my little suzuki Jimny and I headed for the inner city for my two night shifts stationed at Fairview Fire Station.

My awesome crews from 'C" Shift excitedly bundled blankets into Ladder 4 and off we went. we knew were the homeless slept and hide away.

the surprise and joy on the faces of both my crews and the homeless were really very special. To the homeless we became heroes in their battle to survive the bitter cold, for my men they told me that they felt so motivated and uplifted and really good about what they had done. It was really wonderful to do something that felt so good for a change!!
