Bella Vista Meals on Wheels Community Garden

Elizabeth Booysens and her husband started this awesome community garden and we feel privileged to be able to assist them. My passion is food security and self sustained food gardens that will benefit the community two fold: 1:supply the community with fresh, healthy vegetables and 2: sell the excess to generate income.

They battle with water.  The single tap is miles away from the garden and they either use a hose or ferry the water down in small containers.

We are going to try to get an irrigations system and solve their water access. In the meantime we suggested they try to use a permaculture system of taking 2 lt coke bottles, piercing small holes in them and then digging them into the ground with the tops sticking out so they can be refilled as necessary. the water will then seep out the bottles. This system works really well
with our eco-circles so we will need to be a bit creative here.

They also need shade netting, poles as the garden is very exposed to the elements and they would be able to produce more vegetables at a better quality. We would like to help them to start a compost heap using recycled waste from the community and this will help the environment and save costs for the project. We will require wooden planks to make the box structures for the compost the mature.

We would love to get the palisade fencing painted in bright colours and we will approach a paint supply and ask for some donated paint!
this garden has such potential for a community garden and I have approached a restaurant chain to get involved and if all goes well, they will assist in developing the garden and buy fresh produce for their Gauteng branches. so we are keeping our fingers crossed!!!

Next to the garden is an old rusted shipping container that was kindly donated.  it does not have a door nor does it have windows and as such they are unable to use it for a creche. I would like them to use this as a storage shed for the tools and garden equipment.

we would then be looking at trying to get another more suitable container donated to use as a creche.

this would be the childrens back garden - Tata looking over them and inspiring the rainbow children he loved so much! creating a Madiba Garden and a Madiba Creche!!
